History comes alive on your guided tour of Greece's ancient sites. Visit the Acropolis, dating back to the 5th century BC; Olympia, where the Olympics began in 776 BC; the 8th-century BC site of ancient Corinth; the ruins in Mycenae, dating from 1,350 to 1,200 BC; the amazingly well-preserved, 2,300-year-old open-air theater in Epidaurus; Thermopylae, where the battle between the Greeks and Persians took place in 480 BC; Delphi, where you’ll hear about the Oracle. You’ll also enjoy a 4-night cruise on the Aegean Sea visiting some of the most beautiful islands in the world. You'll visit Mykonos, Greece's most famous cosmopolitan island with its seafront village, sandy beaches, and whitewashed houses; Heraklion on Crete, nestled picturesquely between two mountain ranges with archaeological treasures and beautiful scenery; Santorini (weather permitting), still an active volcano offering one of the world's most breathtaking panoramas; Patmos, where St. John the Divine wrote the Revelation; Rhodes, with one of Europe's largest medieval towns; as well as Kusadasi, Turkey.

Itinerary

Day 1 - Depart USA

Board your overnight flight to Athens, Greece.

Day 2 - Athens

Upon arrival transfer to your hotel to meet your tour director and other members of your group.

Day 3 - Athens

Today enjoy a visit to the world-famous ACROPOLIS, perched high on a rocky outcrop overlooking the city. Here, see the Parthenon, the Erechtheum with its Porch of Maidens, the Temple of Athena Nike, and enjoy a panoramic view that includes glimpses of the Temple of Olympian Zeus, Theater of Dionysus, and the beautifully preserved Theseum, where Socrates taught. Later, a city orientation tour features the Old Parliament House and a picture stop at the Panathenaic Stadium. Built in the 2nd century AD, it is the only stadium in the world built entirely of marble and was host to the opening and closing ceremonies of the first modern Olympics in 1896. The rest of the day is at leisure.

Day 4 - Athens -Corinth–Mycenae–Epidaurus–Naupli

In the early morning, we cross the spectacular Corinth Canal, then visit ANCIENT CORINTH, where St. Paul preached. Two highlights today: MYCENAE, where 19th-century excavations reveal impressions of the splendors so vividly described by Homer. Admire the Beehive Tombs, known as the Treasury of Atreus, Lion Gate, Europe’s oldest known monument, remains of Agamemnon’s Royal Palace, and the impressive fortifications of the Citadel. Also, visit the museum. Then, a short drive to EPIDAURUS for a tour of its amazingly well-preserved 2,300-year-old open-air theater. Overnight in nearby Naupli.

Day 5 - Nauplia-Olympia

This morning enjoy a scenic drive through the Arkadian Mountains. Then, spend the afternoon in OLYMPIA, where the athletes of antiquity competed in honor of the king of deities. Learn about the history of those original Olympic Games as you walk among the impressive remains of the Gymnasium and the Temples of Hera and Zeus. Also, visit the MUSEUM that displays Praxiteles’ magnificent statue of Hermes.

Day 6 - Olympia - Delphi

Via the busy seaport of Patras, proceed to mystic Delphi. The afternoon is devoted to a fascinating tour of the ancient sanctuary of the god Apollo in its dramatic setting on the slopes of Mount Parnassus. Hear about the Oracle and tour the EXCAVATIONS. End the day with a visit to the ARCHAEOLOGICAL MUSEUM to admire the Charioteer, an extraordinary 5th-century BC bronze statue.

Day 7 - Delphi - Meteora Area

Drive past Lamia and Trikala to Kalambaka in the unreal, fantastic landscape of Meteora with its rock-top monasteries. Visit VARLAAM MONASTERY, famous for its frescoes, and ST. STEPHEN’S MONASTERY, featuring a unique collection of icons and an incredible panoramic view.
Note - Ladies should pack one long skirt, as shorts or trousers may be inappropriate when visiting the monasteries.

Day 8 - Meteora Area - Thermopylae - Athens

Today’s highlight is a guided visit to THERMOPYLAE, the site of the heroic battle of Leonidas’ 300 doomed Spartans against Xerxes’ huge Persian army. On the way back to Athens, your Tour Director will tell you about Thebes, the setting of Sophocles’ Oedipus Rex, and Marathon, where 10,000 Athenians defeated more than twice that number of Persian invaders in 490 BC. Tonight, enjoy an optional dinner at a local restaurant.

Day 9 - Athens - Lavrion/Piraeus (Cruise Embarkation)- Mykonos

This morning, transfer to the port of Lavrion/Piraeus, where you will sail into the deep-blue waters of the Aegean Sea. Later, dock at the mountainous island of Mykonos.

Day 10 - Cruising: Kusadasi, Turkey–Patmos, Greece

Enjoy two ports of call today. First, Kusadasi on the Turkish coast. Visit the fascinating Greek, Roman, and Byzantine excavations of EPHESUS. Next, join an optional excursion to discover the tiny Greek island of Patmos, and see the Grotto of the Apocalypse.

Day 11 - Cruising: Rhodes

All day today is dedicated to the island of RHODES. Explore the sights in the historic Old City with its ramparts and palaces built by the Knights of St. John during the Crusades. Next is Lindos with the fabulous Temple of Athena. Sail from Rhodes around dinnertime.

Day 12 - Cruising: Heraklion, Crete–Santorini, Greece

Our first port of call today is Heraklion on Crete. A few miles away is KNOSSOS, the center of the 3000 BC Minoan civilization. Afternoon call (weather permitting) at Santorini. Join one of the optional shore excursions either to the volcano or up to the cliff-top village of Oia for one of the world’s most breathtaking panoramas.

Day 13 - Lavrion/Piraeus (Cruise Disembarkation)–Athens

After breakfast on board, disembark the cruise at Lavrion/Piraeus and return to Athens. The balance of the day is at leisure on your own.

TRAVELER REGISTRATION: After you complete your booking, you'll receive an email with access to your online account to complete your registration for this package. You must complete the traveler registration within 24 hours of your booking or by your final payment due date, whichever is earlier. If we do not receive this promptly, your booking may be subject to additional fees and/or cancellation.

CONFIRMATION: After we receive your reservation and deposit we will confirm availability of all components and send you a confirmation email within 1–2 business days. If upon confirmation, any option or component you selected is no longer available, you may cancel your booking and receive a refund on your deposit, which is otherwise non-refundable.

NAME CHANGES: Due to TSA Secure Flight regulations and airline requirements, you must provide us the names of all travelers, including titles such as Jr. or Sr. and any multiple first, middle or last names, exactly as they appear on each passport. These are typically collected on our registration form. Any errors could prevent boarding of flights or entry to some countries and/or necessitate the purchase of new airfare. After you submit the registration form, any name changes (due to errors, marriage, or other reasons) should be reported us immediately, and are subject to a $50 per-change fee by Mainly Europe Vacations, in addition to any supplier fees 

FINAL PAYMENT: If any balance is due after making your booking, you must pay this balance at least 60 days prior to departure, or within 72 hours of your booking if you book after this date.  Late payments are subject to a $50 late payment fee. If your final payment is more than 15 days late, your reservation will be automatically canceled and your deposit will be forfeited.

If you prefer, you may instead print our credit card authorization form (also included with your invoice), complete and sign it, and fax or mail it to us so that we receive it by the payment due date.

To make your payment by check (cashier's check or money order only for final payment), make it out to Mainly Europe Vacations for the amount indicated on your invoice and mail it to our office address (by overnight delivery, if necessary) so that we receive it by the payment due date.
